Frequently Asked Question

Bed bugs are human parasites that have been around for thousands of years. They are insects from the Cimex genus that feed on human blood. They can survive up to one year without feeding and are extremely difficult to exterminate. When they are not feeding, they lurk in dark spots, cracks, and crevices of bed frames, surrounding furniture, and walls. While they are not known to transmit pathogens to the humans they feed on, their bites can have lasting and unpleasant effects.
It may take weeks after the initial infestation begins before any symptoms begin to appear. The time between being bitten for the first time and when symptoms begin to appear allows the bed bugs to reproduce and settle into their new homes. Symptoms are difficult to pinpoint as bite marks can range from small red spots to prominent, painful blisters. Some individuals may feel tired or feverish. In some cases, there may be patches of dead skin or vasculitis (the restriction of blood vessels). Typically, bed bugs target exposed skin for feeding.
Regular pesticides and insecticides are increasingly becoming less effective because bed bugs have developed resistance to them over time, necessitating repeated treatments. Other treatments may include heating the room to 50 °C (122 °F) for more than 90 minutes, frequent vacuuming and use of industrial-strength steamers, washing clothing at high temperatures, and the use of potent pesticides.
Bed bugs primarily travel by hitching a ride with humans from a location that was infested, such as hotels, motels, hostels, dormitories, workplaces, schools, apartment communities, or just about anywhere else. They may also crawl between nearby locations in search of new feeding grounds. Contrary to popular belief, poor hygiene is rarely the cause of the infestation, and bed bugs can thrive in clean environments. Rather, bed bugs travel with people by hiding in clothes and luggage. It is, therefore, more common for bed bugs to spread through frequently visited areas.
Bed bugs occur in all regions of the globe. Infestations have become relatively common in the last few decades across North America. The exact causes of this increase are unclear; theories include increased human travel, more frequent exchange of second-hand furnishings, a greater focus on control of other pests, and increasing resistance to pesticides.
